The Short Michigan Alcohol Screening Tests include 3 different forms: The Self Form (SMA), Short Michigan Alcohol Screening Test- Mother Form (MSM), and the Short Michigan Alcohol Screening Test- Father Form (FSM). Each of these are 13 item measures about problems experienced by the indicated person as a result of drinking alcohol.
There is also a 39 item Parent/Self Form (ASM) which is a combination of the SMA and the PSM.
ITEM CODING
For each form, participants respond either “Yes” or “No” to all items.
All “Yes” responses indicate problems associated with drinking except those for items #1, #4, and #5; for these items, “No” responses indicate problems associated with drinking.
