The YAAPST is a 27-item questionnaire designed to detect alcohol problems among college students by assessing drinking consequences over two time frames, lifetime and past-year along with frequency of occurrence during the last year time frame. The YAP yields no subscales, but can be scored in three different ways, depending on the type of information desired by the clinician or researcher.
ITEM CODING
Subjects are offered the following responses:
For all 27 items:
No, Never | Yes, but not in the past year |
0 | 1 |
For questions 1-8, Yes responses for experiences in the past year were:
1 time | 2 times | 3 times | 4-6 times | 7-11 times | 12-20 times | 21-39 times | 40 or more times |
2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
For questions 9-20 response options for the past year were:
1 time | 2 times | 3 or more times |
2 | 3 | 4 |
In addition, for questions 21-27 this question response is added:
Yes, in the past year |
2 |
SCORING
The YAP yields three different scores, the lifetime YAAPST, the past year’s YAAPST, and the past year’s severity score.
SCORE | DESCRIPTION |
---|---|
Lifetime YAAPST | Endorsements indicating that the item ever occurred (response of 1 or greater) are scored as a +1 and summed across all items to obtain this score. |
Past year’s YAAPST | Endorsements indicating occurrence during the previous year (response of 2 or greater) are scored a +1 and summed across all items to obtain this score. |
Past year’s severity | Endorsements indicating occurrence during the past year are weighted and summed so that a response of 2 is summed as +2, a response of 3 is summed as +3, and so on. |
